The Novel
In Protogenesis, fiction and ancient mythology converge in modern-day Greece. The novel follows Helene, an American teenage girl whose entire life is thrown into disarray when her mother suddenly disappears. She moves to Greece to live with a relative and must navigate how to fit into her new life and transform into the powerful woman she really is. While investigating her mother’s disappearance, Helene discovers a portal to the world of planet Gaea, where Greek mythology comes to life…
Author Alysia Helming’s debut novel, Protogenesis, is the absorbing first installment in the self-titled seven-part YA series. The book, which spent three consecutive weeks as a best-selling novel on Amazon, is available in e-book as well as collector's edition hard-cover and paperback.
The newly premiered films, inspired by Protogenesis, allow viewers to explore must-see locations in modern-day Athens visited by the book’s protagonists, also bringing a few scenes from the book to life onscreen!
These places include the Monastiraki, Plaka, Lycabettus Hill, the Athens Riviera and more. This is the first time since the ‘60s that the Greek Ministry of Culture has issued a permit for an exclusive filming inside the Temple of Poseidon and Ancient Agora!
The gorgeously crafted short-film series with sweeping scenery of Greece is hosted by Greek music star Kostas Martakis and will be submitted to the world’s largest film festivals!

Helming visited Greece ten times over the span of 18 months, providing her novel with a rich and nuanced look at a nation in economic crisis. Alysia’s research was extensive, giving the book an authentic taste of real Athens. She collaborated with well‐known Greek artists, archaeologists, architects, philosophers, mythology experts and every‐day people that live there. This careful research leads some influencers in the literary industry to create a new term to describe Helming’s new type of literature, Cultural Fiction.
Hoping that her books can bring hope and drive tourism to the country Helming created the Footsteps in Athens films with Panik Entertainment and Filmskin, so that readers could visually follow in the characters’ footsteps and learn even more about the country and culture she has come to love.
Helming’s exciting real-life story has led to the creation of a reality-based docu-drama TV series titled Meet Me in Greece, inspired by the making of the Protogenesis novel series. More updates coming soon on Meet Me in Greece.
Alysia Helming started writing at an early age, and throughout her successful career in renewable energy has never forgotten her passion for writing. She has coauthored a pilot for a TV series, written a full-length feature film screenplay and assisted in the nationwide release of the feature-length movie The Great Warming. She studied screenwriting at the University of California, Los Angeles.
